Well, not exactly a bar, but there was beer involved.
In the mid-1960s, Williamsburg, Virginia, was home to two men united by a passion for Scottish heritage: Bob Duncan, a respected local banker, and Dave Shepherd, a Scottish WWI veteran, immigrant and proprietor of Shepherd's Scottish Shop, which, if you were of Scottish descent and living in Williamsburg in the mid-1960's, was the place to hang out and share a beer and a story. Their shared vision led to the founding of the Saint Andrew's Society of Williamsburg.
Dave, drawing from his experience with a Scottish organization in Michigan, and Bob, leveraging insights from the Saint Andrew's Society in Savannah, Georgia, collaborated to lay the groundwork for the new society. In 1967, they sought guidance from the Saint Andrew's Society of Washington, D.C., which provided invaluable support.
On May 8, 1968, the Saint Andrew's Society of Williamsburg was officially established during a meeting at Bob's workplace, the Peninsula National Bank on Duke of Gloucester Street. This date is observed and celebrated as our Founders' Day. Since its inception, the society has been dedicated to celebrating and preserving Scottish-American traditions and heritage in the Williamsburg area.
