Check these Frequently asked questions- we might have the answer you are asking about!

Do I have to be Scottish to join SAS-W?

No.  We welcome people with Scottish lineage – as well as Scottish enthusiasts!

What is the difference between an active member and associate member?

An active member will have provable Scottish lineage.  Active members have society voting rights and are eligible to serve on the Board of Directors.

An associate member may not have known Scottish lineage – or may simply be interested in Scottish culture.  Associate members may attend all Society events and meetings and help with committee work.

How long is the application approval process?

Applications are reviewed during the monthly board meeting.  As a result, an application could take up to four weeks to be approved. The membership secretary notifies the applicant upon receipt of the application, and again soon after the board’s review.

Do I have to wear a kilt?

No.  Although Scottish attire is encouraged, it is not a requirement.

What is worn under a kilt?

That is one of the world's great mysteries!

What is a Scottish Ceilidh?

A Ceilidh is a gathering or celebration of family and friends.  It may include music, dancing, or storytelling.

What is the significance of Burns Night?

This celebrates the birth of Robert  Burns, Scotland's Bard.  You may know him as the author of Auld Lang Syne.

Are donations to the Society tax deductible?

Yes; SAS-W is a 501(c)3 corporation, all donations are tax-deductible, as prescribed by law.

Are SAS-W events for members only?

Not all events are members only.  For example, folks who are interested in the society are welcome to attend Pub Night, with prior notice to a member or the membership secretary.  Pub night is held from February through October, on the 4th Thursday of the month.
